Why the Mind Always Runs from Fear? And How to End It! By Jiddu Krishnamurti-



Fear has always been one of the biggest problems everyone's life. It hides in our thoughts, in our feelings, in our relationships, and even in the way we see the future. Sometimes fear is open and strong, like fear of death or fear of losing someone close. At other times it is hidden, like the quiet fear of not being good enough or the fear of being lonely.

Most of us do not know how to deal with fear. The common reaction is to run away from it or to find a way to escape. Some people escape through entertainment, some through belief, some by keeping themselves very busy. Others try to cover fear by seeking comfort in religion, in family, or in possessions.

But Krishnamurthy explains in 'Freedom from the Known' that these escapes never really solve fear. They only hide it for a while. The moment the escape is gone, the fear returns. In fact, the very act of running away gives more strength to fear, because we never actually understand it.


What really fear is?

To look at fear clearly, we must first see what it really is. Fear is always related to something in the future, something that may happen or may not happen. We fear losing our job, but the job is still with us today. We fear death, but death is not here at this moment. We fear being insulted tomorrow, but the insult has not yet happened.

Krishnamurthy points out that fear is always connected with thought and time. Thought imagines a future event, gives it shape, and then the mind reacts with fear. Without this movement of thought, fear cannot exist.

For example, if you suddenly meet a snake while walking, the body naturally reacts. That is not psychological fear, it is simple physical reaction. But when thought says, “What if I meet a snake tomorrow?” That is fear created by thought.


Watching fear without judgment

This is the most important step. When fear arises, do not call it good or bad. Do not say, “I must get rid of this fear.” The moment you judge it, you have already moved away from observing it.

Instead, be fully aware of how fear feels in the body and in the mind. Notice the quick heartbeat, the tight breath, the restless thought. Watch it like you would watch a bird in the sky—without trying to change it.

In this simple observation, something amazing happens, fear begins to lose its strength. Because now, you are no longer a prisoner of fear. You are just an observer.


Ending Fear Through Understanding

Krishnamurthy makes it very clear that fear cannot be removed by effort, discipline, or suppression. Effort belongs to thought, and thought itself is the root of fear.

Fear ends when the mind understands it completely. When we see that it is the product of thought projecting the future. The moment we see this truth deeply, not just as an idea but as a fact, fear begins to dissolve.

This ending of fear is not something that happens slowly in time. It happens in the very moment of complete awareness.


Living Without Fear

A life without fear is a life of true freedom. When there is no fear, there is no need to escape, no need to depend on illusions for comfort. The mind becomes quiet, open, and alive in the present moment.

And it is only such a mind that can know what love is, what joy is, and what truth is.
